VENUZI PIT PASTE

What ignited the spark for Pit Paste?

I had serious concerns over the aluminum spray deodorant available. The products didn’t actually rid me of BO and my daily guilt got the better of me, spraying chemicals directly into the pores closest to my boobies. My family and I moved Off Grid from the Gold Coast. After the move, I had more time to explore natural alternatives with all aspects of our daily routine. I made my first batch (with heaps of leftover) so I gave my close friends and family a jar in a reused jam and mustard jars with a handwritten label stuck with sticky tape! They wanted more so I started selling and growing from there.

What has been your most satisfying moment in business?

The joy of talking to people who have purchased my product. Helping others by providing a natural and Organic alternative. Gaining new stockists with a common interest and goal to preserve the planet.

What is unique about your business? What makes you unique?

My business manufacturing area and home is all Off Grid. The power I use is from the sun, the heating is also from the sun and water is from the rain. All the rubbish we produce is literally carried by us, onto the Ute and taken to the rubbish tip.

What is one thing you think people should be doing to help lead a waste-free lifestyle?

Single-use items need to be eliminated or reduced where possible. Small choices make a big impact.

We value the planet, Our jars are reusable glass, our Organic ingredients are locally sourced, less transportation needed and if it’s not sourced locally, we support ethical and fair trade Organic ingredients to ensure the families who work hard are financially supported.

PERKY BY NATURE

What ignited the spark for Perky?

Last year’s shocking news from ABC’s War On Waste that coffee cups weren’t recyclable really kickstarted Perky by Nature. I was always a big fan of the takeaway cups feel and never really found a non-disposable alternative that I actually enjoyed drinking out of, and would make me want to reuse. I started looking into sustainable materials combined with something that looked and felt like a takeaway cup and discovered bamboo fibre. At the time I was working as a barista and barista instructor, I didn’t have the means to start the business myself so I started a very successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to get Perky going, 6 months later… here we are!

What has been your most satisfying moment in business?

I really love people’s reactions to our cups when they first see them and pick them up. They also strike up all sorts of interesting conversations about reusing and looking after the environment. That’s what Perky by Nature is all about.

What is unique about your business? What makes you unique?

Our cups are made from bamboo fibre, a sustainably grown, biodegradable material that breaks down in around 2 years, as opposed to plastic which takes 100’s of years. There are many other great reusable coffee brands out there, especially KeepCup who really started the amazing movement, we’re unique because of the materials we use to create our cups.

What is one thing you think people should be doing to help lead a waste-free lifestyle?

Reusing is one thing but the best thing is just to reduce everything you buy. Simplify your life, don’t just buy things for the sake of it. Think about your purchases in terms of how long they will last and how long they will make you happy. Single-use items and “fast fashion” are prime examples of the things we should be completely avoiding.

SECOND NATURE BOTANICALS

Meet the passionate, soulful and absolutely lovely Kirsty, the creator behind  Second Nature Botanicals.

What ignited the spark for SNB?
A few years prior we were suffering from skin allergies & we discovered most supermarket cleaners including those we were using were full of toxic chemicals.  We gave ourselves a two-year challenge to use up our old toxic cleaning, home, self-care, and beauty products and convert ourselves to safe options.  Through this journey, we dabbled in making our own products at home with essential oils and our passion for making simple, safe and sustainable products was borne!
What has been your most satisfying moment in business?
When customers bring back their empty bottles for refills! a) they love our product and b) its zero-waste, winning!
What is unique about your business?
We are unique because we have such a huge focus on sustainability. We know that plastic never fully breaks down (eeeek, scary huh!) this means that every piece of plastic that we use in our lifetime will still be on this planet in many generations time. Choosing to be mainly plastic-free by using GLASS bottles designed to be REFILLED and REUSED is a huge part of our sustainability ethos.
What is one thing you think people should be doing to help lead a waste-free lifestyle?
Composting food, paper, and green scraps!! Such a great way to deal with food scraps and provide your garden with nutrient dense food too.

Apart from the obvious like choosing glass bottles and offering refills, packaging for all online orders is all COMPOSTABLE and we shred old newspapers and paperwork for the filling.
